St. Francis of Assisi abandoned a life of luxury for a life devoted to Christianity after reportedly hearing the voice of God, who commanded him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty.
The church began as St. Francis Parish in 1849, the year before California became a state and San Francisco was incorporated as a city. The church was first a small wooden shack, and was then replaced by an adobe structure. In the early 90s, the archdiosese was going to close the church, but a concerted effort by parishoners, along with the fact that the building was registered as a National Historical Site or on the register of Historical Buildings (I always forget how that works) led to an effort to make this place the only National Shrine to Saint Francis of Assisi anywhere in the world and since San Francisco was named for Saint Francissaint francis of assisi church san francisco Welcome to the National Shrine of Saint Francis of Assisi and the namesake of our city, San Francisco.
